My Kitty Jinx

Today was the day for Kitty Jinx’ annual vet visit.

Jinx doesn’t like the vet.  And the vet doesn’t care much for Jinx, either. She has had a few negative experiences with my little orange kitty that has made her slightly wary about his annual checkup.

So before he comes for his physical, she makes sure that we have loaded him up on kitty drugs so that he won’t be quite so aggressive.

At 8 a.m. I gave him his tranquilizer pill.  This is a major act of  determination, as he can spit pills out faster than I can drop into his little kitty mouth.  Every time I thought  he had swallowed the bait, I would find the little pink pill on the floor next to where he was sitting.  He had a daring look in his eye, as if to ask me if I wanted to have one more go at poking that pill down his throat.  It took three tries, but on the last one, I did see him swallow and did not find any pink pill on the carpet or floor nearby.

So, at 9 a.m.,  I stuffed him into his cute little red  kitty carrier,  loaded him into the car, and drove him over to the vet’s office.  He likes to ride in the car.  It was the best part of his whole day.

The vet’s office is within PetSmart.  Saturday at PetSmart is doggy adoption day.  It was not the best day for Jinx to visit the vet, with all the doggies lined up in their crates, howling and barking as we walked through the aisles trying to get to the vet station.  I had given a thought or two of adopting a cute little doggie to be a companion to my cute little orange kitty.  But it was only a very fleeting thought.  Probably not the best thought I had all day.

But we got him there, and placed him in his cute little red kitty carrier on the counter.  The first challenge was getting Jinxie weighed.  They wanted me to take him out of his cute litte red kitty carrier and put him on the critter scale.  Like I’m going to take him out of the his safety zone and set him down on a big scale that smells like all kinds of critters?  Nope.  Easier to weigh him and then weigh the carrier and subtract the difference.  For the record, my little orange kitty is a whomping 11 pounds, 3 ounces.  The crate is another 3 pounds.

After weighing him and signing off on all his paperwork, I left my little furbaby for the day, with the promise that they would call me as soon as he was up and at’em following his checkup and shots,  along with a  little kitty pedicure so he won’t scratch furniture (or people).

So…by the time I left, the pill should have taken effect.  It actually should have be working within 30 minutes after he swallowed it.  By the time I left him on the counter, he should have been a very laid-back kitty.

But…it didn’t work at 30 minutes.  And it didn’t work an hour later.  And it didn’t work two hours later.  In fact, it never did take effect.

At 1 pm. the vet’s office called me and asked me to come rescue them.

They were unable to get Jinx out of his cute little red kitty carrier to do the comprehensive physical exam.  However, they had managed to get his rabies and dystemper shots through the mesh of his cute little red kitty carrier.

But from there it went way down hill, way fast.

He managed to unzip the front end of the cute little red kitty carrier and escaped, holding them at bay in the back room of the animal hospital.  They were able to squeeze around to the door and safely get out, leaving him to hiss and spit and growl at anything that moved in the back office.

It took me about 30 minutes to get him calmed down and to get back into the cute little red kitty carrier.  He was still hissing and spitting and growling as I carried him out to the car, walking through the aisle of the doggies waiting to be adopted.  As he passed through, they all ceased their howling and barking and became strangely silent.

I got him home and opened up his cute little red kitty carrier, and he wobbled out.  He sprung up on the couch and has been curled up next to me, purring at full speed, ever since. What a sweet little orange kitty.

Who needs a guard dog when you have a cute little orange kitty cat like Jinx?
